HRHR RESULTS: NATIONAL CONVENTION.

national convention;
guess which one of our mods has been wanting
to do this mission since september.

Here are your mission results!

DAVID, with a difficulty of 16 out of 30: You guys somehow rolled at 29, so you were wildly successful. The extra roll (will he paint a picture of green haired Achilles?) at a 6 out of 10 difficulty rolled in a 6, so you somehow did convince the dude, just barely.

The success causes David not to vote, and his supporters are swayed by other voters.

SAINT-JUST, with a difficulty of 20 out of 20: You guys rolled exactly a 20! Somehow, Saint-Just was convinced to vote to delay the king's execution with the tried and true method of random beatings and threats. Given how vociferously Saint-Just argued for the king's execution just days before, this throws the convention into an uproar, and his loyalty to the revolution is questioned loudly. Historians debate for ages afterward just what changed his mind, fueled in part by a diary entry found detailing 'horrible ghosts' coming to him in the night before the vote.

Still, a vote to delay is a vote to delay; Saint-Just's supporters are swayed.

ROBESPIERRE, with a difficulty of 14 out of 30: you guys rolled a 10. Luck just wasn't on your side, guys. While Robespierre seemed very convinced when you left, he still voted no when the time came. However, he did give an unusually long speech on the nature of his decision, seeming as though he felt the need to justify it to himself as well as the Convention. As this was in clear violation of the rules -- in actual history, none of the voters were allowed to give long speeches, to the point that Robespierre actually made a joke about it on the floor (nobody found it very funny) -- and Robespierre had to be dragged off the floor.

Still, he votes to kill the king, and his supporters are swayed.

DANTON, with a difficulty of 15: you guys rolled a 22. Your argument was massively successful, and Danton shocks the convention by voting to delay the convention. He speaks about allying France with other countries in the coming months, and the importance of making this process careful and methodical. After all, they need to prove to the world the importance of their mission. For the rest of the revolution, Danton writes envoys and missives to other countries, trying to bulk up allegiances to the people of these countries. It also means Danton becomes a huge proponent of France's military interventionism policy-- lots of invading neighboring countries 'for their own good'.

Ultimately, Danton votes to delay.

PHILIPPE EGALITE, with an 18 difficulty: You guys rolled a 15, failing by a very narrow margin. Your plan was sound, and Philippe was very convinced by your argument... but his own sense of short-sighted self preservation still won out, and he votes to kill his cousin. He turns some heads, however, when he outright mentions rumors of his own interests, denying them outright, and saying that a vote to kill the king is a vote for a free France. There will be no royalty after Louis Capet, for there is no more line of succession. The people of France have freed themselves from these shackles, and will never go back. Ultimately, Philippe must be dragged from the floor as well, but the speech is rousing enough that several people are convinced, and history is changed; defying all expectation, Philippe survives the revolution. His loyalty is not questioned again.

Still, his supporters are swayed by vote to kill.

MARAT, who was rated at a difficulty of 17: You guys rolled a 16, failing very, very narrowly. As such, we'll say Marat had a plan in his back pocket no one could have foreseen, and had someone elected to vote in his stead. So while Marat spent a fair amount of time poisoned, wandering the sewers, and accusing brick walls of being counter-revolutionaries, one of his toadies still voted for him and swayed his followers. Afterward, Marat wrote several papers on counter-revoltionary action in France, which he now bragged about knowing since he'd been 'caught' in one of their 'dastardly plots'.

Still, a vote is a vote, and his supporters were swayed.

For those keeping track at home, that does mean the king dies a month ahead of schedule. Oops?

Since this is the first HRHR mission to outright fail, we want to say that this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In Agoge, characters and players are not punished for failure. It simply means different outcomes and changes, in this case, to history itself. You'll see the ramifications of this throughout the game, and some may even be in your character's favor! Who knows.

Likewise, we want to say how proud we are of each and every participant for coming up with such clever, creative strategies, working well with your fellow players, and having a ton of fun with this mission. While the characters may have 'failed', the players rose to the occasion and we're absolutely delighted by the effort you put in.

The log detailing the execution of Louis and the leaving of France will be up on the 30th. Until then, the trial will be held over the next week, and characters can discuss the outcome.
