OOC PLANNING POST: THE BATTLE OF VALMY.
IT'LL BE FINE;
the struggle carries on
Let's get ready for the second log, which will feature the actual battle of Valmy itself! The log will be going up on the 14th!
For the curious, here's a rundown of how the battle actually went down in history.
SPOILER WARNING
The Prussian army marches toward France, and is trying to outmaneuver the French. Brunswick sends his men into the woods, hoping to evade and possibly break French lines. Having none of this, a segment of the French army climbed up on a nearby windmill and began firing down on the valley beneath them, so the Prussian's couldn't safely leave the forest cover. The French used this extra time to set up cannons and fire down even more heavily on the Prussians.
This, obviously, caused difficulty for the Prussians, who became panicked and indecisive; Kellerman famously began to shout vive la nation, and the entire army begins to answer him, shouting and singing French songs. This destroys Prussian morale, and everyone is shocked when Brunswick begins to retreat.
PLOT TWIST
However, several factors have changed in this revised history!
The dysentery that originally weakened Prussian forces has been largely cleared up thanks to Regency operatives working in secret. Not only that, but the Prussians have been equipped with better artillery and their numbers have been inflated by undercover Regency operatives. Be careful out there, guys...
HIGH RISK HIGH REWARD MISSION
If you don't care about the HRHW mission and want to skip all this tl;dr, click here.
This log will also involve the FIRST High Risk High Reward mission! It's an espionage-based mission involving stealth and infiltration, and it will be take place the day before the actual battle itself, so everyone who signs up can participate in the main log as well. (You guys can log it out whenever though, backdate or forward date as needed!)
The result of this mission will have major consequences for the rest of the France mission! However, though there will be other equally important HRHW missions next month (with more signup slots than this one and more time to plan), so don't sweat it if you miss out on this one.
OH MY GOETHE
This is a spy quest that requires you sneaking behind enemy lines to save the life of Goethe, a famous writer who is traveling along with the Prussian army.
Sources say that Regency operatives are trying to assassinate him. Sources don't know why, though, and in war, information is just as valuable as victory on the battlefield.
⏩This mission is rated at a 17 out of 20 in stealth / undercover, or 17 out of 20 in strategy / tactics. (If you need a refresher on how skill and difficulty ratings work, here you go.)
⏩There are 4 signup slots, and signups close on the 12th (that's in 48hrs). After signups close, the success or failure of the mission will be rolled, and you can plan how you're going to play that out, or play it by ear, it's all good.
⏩The worst possible outcome is everyone being caught and potentially being imprisoned / tortured (which will open up another mission where characters can rescue them), Goethe dying, and history changing irrevocably to compensate.
⏩The best possible outcome is Goethe (or anyone else, for that matter) never noticing your presence, bringing the Regency assassin back to the Commander alive for interrogation, stealing some Prussian swag along the way, and getting to say you saved the life of one of the most influential writers in Western literary canon.
⏩The success of the mission will be factored into the majority of the rolls-- there only need to be 2 successful rolls for overall mission success. Individual failures may affect overall outcomes, but they will not affect individual outcomes; ie, someone else's failure won't result in your character getting locked up or caught if they roll a success, but it might result in the failure of the mission overall.
⏩Because this mission's outcomes will be decided in advance via dicerolls, there's no 'due date' on the log being threaded out.
⏩In the case of a mission failure where a rescue is required, we're going to put up another OOC post with that information. This is why signups for this mission are only lasting two days, and why the ooc planning post is going up to early; it's so in case of failure there's time to set up the secondary mission.
⏩If a secondary rescue mission is needed, the plotting post will go up on the 12th, and the actual threading will be factored into the battle of Valmy log itself. In the future, we want these missions to have larger planning time, but since this is the first one the game timing is a little cramped in order to fit it into weekend log structure. It won't be this way in the future!
⏩The mission itself will be ICly structured by assigning characters into two pairs, each will be infiltrating the Prussian camp via different routes to minimize interaction and maximize the chance of success. The pairs will work based on strength; one will be lookout, handler, or tactician while the other gets their hands dirty with stealth infiltration. Because of this, please select the role you want your character to play, and their skill level within that roll, when you sign up.
⏩While all four characters will be physically infiltrating the camp, the ones taking the stealth role will be more focused on actual infiltration (or going undercover as a Prussian) and rooting out the Regency spy (spies? We just don't know), while the tactician will be making sure all the moving pieces stay in order, keeping track of guard rotation, keeping watch, and communicating with them via BCE, etc.
⏩If your character isn't the type to volunteer for this mission but you want them to participate anyway, you can assume that they were specifically selected for it by command. If they're the type to volunteer, they won't be turned away!
⏩If an uneven number of stealth / tactical characters sign up, we'll... figure something out, idk.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
As for everyone who isn't signing up for the HRHW mission and / or just wants to plot out what they're doing for the main mission: Feel free to jot down any ideas or interests you have in the comments and see who bites.
Remember: HRHW missions aren't the only way to influence the plot! Coming up with plots of your own, missions you want to play out, or influencing the scene in some way can have a consequence on history, for good or for ill. Let us know if you have any big ideas, but really, anything within reason goes.
Feel free to get as elaborate as you like-- if you want to run into a spy or a down-on-his-luck peasant while going to local farms, go ahead! If you want to corner a Prussian fighter sneaking behind French lines, feel free! We want you to feel like you have wiggle room, and we want to encourage creativity and interaction with the setting. If there's anything you think we should know about, or want to run by us first, feel free as well!
...I sure say 'feel free' a lot.

cannon killer squad
In an attempt to counter their improved threat, Takatora will be making good use of his ice abilities to take out some of the cannons and ruin some of the enemy's gunpowder supply. I'm looking for characters who want to team up and break the cannons he freezes, or help to identify the gunpowder stashes, or both!
It's been okayed by the mods, so all that's left to do is to plot. If you have your own ideas for other ways to damage their fire power, we can work it into their efforts. If you want to make it a tense affair, that's cool too B)

If the mission succeeds she won't want to see the work she grudgingly put in already amount to nothing, and if it fails she'll probably hold some grudges against the enemy. She may not be sold on COST, but motivation either way!

76 is pretty good at property damage in that he doesn't need any extra stuff, just his own government-sponsored super strength so he's here to kick apart some cannons if you need.

Destroying cannons? Count Ashitaka in! He doesn't really have any magical powers or anything like that, but he can swing a big hammer and sabotage gunpowder stashes. (:

I should have the log starter up today for everyone!
